The various contrasts in this bird were each interesting to me: the black trim against the white, the red crest and the dark iridescent feathers that range from teal to black as they move with the light. I wanted the focus to be the draping cowl on the bird, which is the feature the male is showing off to the female.
This painting was juried into the CSPWC's 2025 Open Water show.
