Down From the Grove
Framed diptych painting
(28 x 20) + (14 x 20) (not including frame)
I live near one of the best places in Ontario to regularly find Black Vultures, a local specialty. Once an extreme rarity, they can now, with a little luck, be found throughout the year if you know where to look. There are two locations: one on either side of the Niagara River, which connects not only Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, but Canada and the USA.
Vultures are intelligent, sensitive, social creatures. The snags these vultures perch on aren’t physically connected, but the social entanglements of the birds exist regardless. In many parts of their range, Black Vultures outnumber Turkey Vultures, but as newcomers here, there are rarely more than a few taking comfort in the solidarity of the flock. A juvenile Turkey Vulture also must learn and navigate social norms. There is a challenge for the outside observer to accept the existence of a valid experience that exists outside themselves.
This piece was part of the Western Visions 2024 exhibition and show.
